At dusk, Beacon clocks in without ceremony. The lamp turns green, the ring settles around the tower, and two beams begin their patient crossing. Boats do not receive speeches. They receive a direction, twice, then enough darkness to make their own decision. By dawn, Beacon has moved nowhere and completed the entire shift.
